“Some people think they are in community, but they are only in proximity. True community requires commitment and openness. It is a willingness to extend yourself to encounter and know the other.” –David Spangler
Since I did not give you a Monday Short, I will try to be brief this morning. As a matter of fact, I am just going to give you a few scripture references to encourage you and exhort you to (1) be part of the community of believers by being engaged in your local church, and (2) support worthy community efforts to minister to others. Pray before you proceed to read, and also pray afterwards to see how God is speaking specifically to you about the need to see yourself as part of the community.
“Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor; for if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up!” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
“Friends always show their love.” (Proverbs 17:17a Good News Translation)
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17 NASB)
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (I Peter 2:10 NIV)
“They were continually and faithfully devoting themselves to the instruction of the apostles, and to fellowship, to eating meals together and to prayers. A sense of awe was felt by everyone, and many wonders and signs (attesting miracles) were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed [in Jesus as Savior] were together and had all things in common [considering their possessions to belong to the group as a whole]. And they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing the proceeds with all [the other believers], as anyone had need. Day after day they met in the temple [area] continuing with one mind, and breaking bread in various private homes. They were eating their meals together with joy and generous hearts, praising God continually, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord kept adding to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42-48 The Amplified Bible)
Be blessed!
