“Therefore become imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father]; and walk continually in love [that is, value one another—practice empathy and compassion, unselfishly seeking the best for others], just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God [slain for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance.” (Ephesians 5:1-2 The Amplified Bible)
When I was working, an employee brought her daughter into my HR office to discuss her need for a long-term leave of absence. I’ll skip the confidential details about the request, as well as the response. But there is something beneficial to share from this experience. The employee possessed some bilingual skills, but she wanted to make sure that the reason for her request was made absolutely clear. Therefore, she brought her daughter with her who could speak Spanish and English fluently, actually perfectly. Her assistance was helpful.
In the course of the conversation, the daughter shared that she was visiting her mother, taking a vacation from her job in Italy. She also shared that when she first came to Italy, she did not speak Italian. But after living in Italy for two years; after being immersed in the country’s culture for that long, she not only became fluent in Italian, but she knew how various words should be used appropriately, and in the proper context. Keep reading to see what’s in this meditation for you.
As Christians, we need to immerse ourselves in the things that bring us closer to God, developing us in a way that we not only speak as Christians, but also walk as Christians. We need to experience this type of immersion to help us reflect all that is mentioned in the opening verses.
How do we experience immersion? First, get into the word of God. You cannot imitate Him if you do not know Him. Second, be involved in the church. Look for mentors and good, humble, Christian role models, saints who have matured in the faith, including, of course God-sent preachers and teachers of the word of God. How about a third thing we need to do in our spiritual immersion? Okay, since you asked, I’ll give you one. Third, pray that the Lord will establish your steps. If you want to be fluent in regard to the “Christian Language,” spoken not only by your words, but also by your actions. Friend, you need to make some goals today that will enable you to grow as a believer. These spiritual immersion tips are not only for you. They are for me too. They are for all believers.
Our goal for the rest of this week: “Immerse yourself!!” Have a tremendously good Tuesday! Be blessed!
Committed to the climb,
Mark L. King
