“Later, in one of his talks, Jesus said to the people, “I am the Light of the world. So, if you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, for living light will flood your path.” (John 8:12 The Living Bible)
This is your Monday Short meditation. See if you are in agreement with me. At least a couple days of the week, for the last two months, I find myself singing or asking my electronic device to play “Shine on Me.” I have to admit that this particular song , when I was a youngster, in my mind it was considered to be a Deacon’s devotion song, sang repeatedly, seemingly in a dragged out rhythm, made with their sincere voices and serious faces; sang acapella, while they awaited the pianist or organist to arrive and take his seat at the church’s primary instrument.
Today, in the chronological winter season, better known as the senior citizens era, these words have real meaning. You see, every day, I need the light from heaven to shine on me. Every day when I am burdened by this or that, when I sing this song, my burdens are eased. For it reminds me that I can find rest in Jesus. Every day, when I need hope, or I need the Helper, the Holy Spirit, remind me of Jesus’ promises, or on days when the joy of life is hidden from difficulty, I can remove that curtain of dismay by asking the Lord to shine on me. How different we hear as we get older.
Let me just close with these lyrics from the African American Heritage Hymnal (Page 256). See what meaning this song has for you today. Have a marvelous Monday! Don’t worry, the Master will help you. Experience magnified peace, my friend. Be blessed!
Shine on me, Shine on me.
Let the light from the lighthouse,
Shine on me.
Shine on me. Shine on me.
Let the light from the lighthouse,
shine on me.
Committed to the climb,
Mark L. King
