“ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FOUR-YEAR-OLD?”

“Jesus drew near and said to them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.”(Matthew 28:18-20 GNT)

After reading the story that follows, you will have a type of approach to share with someone you know who is unsaved. Yes, I’m equipping you to do some personal evangelism, and even more important, I’m providing you with an way to be a witness for the Lord, as we have been commissioned in the verse above.

Here’s the story. A grandfather is driving eastward down a busy thoroughfare with his four-year-old grandson in the backseat. As the grandfather comes to a busy intersection, he moves over into one of the two turning lanes to make a left turn. The traffic light for the cars going south turns red and it is the grandfather’s turn to proceed as the green turning appears on the traffic light. As he gets ready to turn, he notices a motorcycle, speeding, dangerously running the red light rather than stopping as he should. The grandfather says, “Where is he going?” Without any hesitancy at all the four-year-old grandson, strapped safely in his car seat shows his spiritual insight, answering his grandfather, “Either heaven or hell!”  The grandfather is amazed and amused. He is laughing, but simultaneously he lifts one hand off the steering wheel, stops the laughter and says, “Thank you, Lord!” You need to know that the grandfather was not thanking the Lord because his alertness avoided an accident, but he was expressing great gratitude that his grandson was learning something at an early age from his few years in Sunday School and Children’s church.

The grandfather started pondering, thinking about some unsaved adults he knows. As he ponders, he starts planning to ask some lost individuals, “Are you smarter than a four-year old?” He presumes they will ask, “Why are you asking me that question?” His plan is to share the story above that he just experienced at the intersection on the busy thoroughfare and then he would smoothly transition into sharing some scriptures from the Romans Road, including the one below.

I hope you were blessed by the story, but I also hope you tell it to someone else and then ease into personal evangelism. If not, think of one of your own life experiences that will serve as an attention getter that allows you to transition into helping someone who is lost come into the camp of the found.  Have a terrific Tuesday. Be blessed!

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 New King James Version)

Committed to the climb,

  1. It’s definitely a question to consider. Some four-year olds are clearly above average when it comes to their level of understanding. I couldn’t say that I will always be smarter. I do know that I can share the story or a similar experience that could ease the conversation into one of salvation. The issue for me is having the courage to do so.

    1. Thank you for your regular responses, and evidence that you did not just read the meditation, but you reflected on it personally and reached a goal calling for more courage. May God hear your prayer. Be blessed!
