YOUR FALL WARDROBE

“I put on righteousness, and it clothed me…” (Job 29:14a NASB)

I was looking at the advertisements in a recent edition of a fashion magazine for men.  I have to admit that I was glad when I saw that many of the 126 pages featured advertisements on watches.  I’m glad for the comeback of watches because I’m tired of my smart watch managing my life and informing me of health issues like your heart beats per minute or blood pressure rate, and even telling me when to stand, walk and engage in various activities.  I was also glad to see the visual message in the publication, indicating that ties are coming back in style and there were a variety of boots that seemed not only comfortable, but also cool to wear.  I loved some of the patterns in the clothing apparel, but truthfully, the designs did not fit my age bracket.  The same was true for the tapered pants with their folded cuffs.  I liked the patterns on the pants, but I have decided to stick with my old dress pants and regular fitting jeans.  Double breasted jackets were back in style.  Know that I’ll be keeping my eye out at the thrift store for those jackets, donated by someone not up on the resurrection of old fashion trends.  I looked through the magazine more than once for some ideas.  That’s going through a lot of pages, and I did it at least twice.  Do the math!  Two times 126 which equals 252 pages.  I’m sure that some people will keep that magazine in a neat place where it can be used as a style reference over and over again, to put together their fall, and even early winter wardrobe.  Now the thing is, by the next quarterly edition, some of these fashion trends will change again.  And next fall, what is in the book this year, it will be obsolete.

Thirty-six years ago, after waiting nine months to preach my first sermon after the announcing of my calling to the gospel ministry, I spoke, using as a text the Scriptures below and I entitled it “The Outfit of Christian Character.”  Guess what?  It has not become obsolete, and it will still definitely help you look good as you model your character as a child of God.  Oh more good news!  The suggested outfit can be adorned by individuals at every generation, young or old.  Adopting the recommended outfit, you will be styling in your saintly outfit.  This I guarantee  Take some time to actually read it, and do so more than once.  It is only 200 words in the paraphrase edition that I chose to use this morning.  That’s far less work then going through 176 pages, even one time, and it is much more valuable to you and the kingdom of God.  Have a good Friday!  Be blessed!

“What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.  Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry—but don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge.  And don’t stay angry. Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the Devil that kind of foothold in your life.  Did you use to make ends meet by stealing?  Well, no more! Get an honest job so that you can help others who can’t work. Watch the way you talk.  Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth.  Say only what helps, each word a gift.  Don’t grieve God.  Don’t break his heart.  His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself.  Don’t take such a gift for granted.  Make a clean break with all cutting, backbiting, profane talk.  Be gentle with one another, sensitive.  Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:25–32 The Message Bible)

Still committed to the climb,

Mark L. King
