A BASKETBALL ANALOGY

“Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away.” (Psalm 90: 10 NLT)

Since yesterday’s meditation did not meet the criteria to be classified as a Monday Short, I will make it up today. In a Sunday School lesson, I used an analogy of life being like a basketball game, divided into four quarters, well that is fitting except for college basketball that still play two halves. Being between the 70–80-year-old bracket, I stated that I was in the fourth quarter of life. If the Lord blesses me with years beyond the age of 80, I will serve Him in every overtime period that He blesses me to see.

An old coach once said, “Don’t wait until the fourth quarter to do your best! Play from the tip-off to the final bell, giving your best.” Good advice for basketball players, but great wisdom for you and me to live by. Now, next I was going to say, “Figure which quarter of life you are in and give it your best for the Lord.” But because, as it is in sport where at different levels the length of a game time and the time allotted for quarters vary, I decided to say this to you, specifically you, “Give it your best now and going forward!” Love you! Be blessed!

Fight the good fight of the faith [in the conflict with evil]; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and [for which] you made the good confession [of faith] in the presence of many witnesses.” (I Timothy 6:12 Amplified Bible)

Committed to the climb,
