GRANDMA’S HAND

“…God had decided on an even better plan for us…” (Hebrews 11:40 GNB)

Note that I did not say, Grandma’s Hands. Even though Bill Withers refers to both hands in his famous recording that includes the lyrics, “went to church on Sunday morning,” would serve as a commendation or compliment for example set by churchgoing grandmothers in our day, I chose to stick with s singular reference to Grandma’s Hand. It is a true story of a grandmother who too faithfully went to church on Sunday morning.  She taught the surrounding congregation something of significant as she pointed one hand toward heaven and verbalized the word “Better!”  After several Sundays, everyone knew what was meant when  grandma’s hand pointed to beyond the skies.  All knew it was a non-verbal from of communication to symbolize “Better.”  She was implying that “Better” only really comes when the Lord is involved.

So let’s imitate Grandma’s Hand motion right now, at this very moment.  How so? Point your hand toward heaven and say, “Better.”  That was your practice session.  Now, raise your hand toward heaven again without saying a word that can be heard in anyone’s hearing.  Think internally as you do this, “Better.”  Do this throughout the day as the Holy Spirit reminds you that the only way to really experience “Better” is when the Lord is involved.

I can only guess what you will experience: a better start to the week, a better Monday morning, a better sense of the need for God, a better relationship with the Lord. a better awareness of how the Christ in you positively impacts others, and a better appreciation for how God is good to you and yes, He is good all the time.  Continue your “Grandma’s Hand” exercises throughout the day.  Somebody is going to ask you, “What does that mean?” When they inquire, you inform them about Grandma’s Hand and the meaning behind it.  Don’t hesitate for they gave you permission to share with your answer.  And perhaps you will perpetuate “Better” in all the spaces and places you find yourself today.  Oh your week will not be perfect, but in spite of an interruptions, intrusions, or irritations show up uninvited, reach to heaven and seek help from our Helper!  And as you do, yes, point  to the sky and quietly pray for “Better!”  By the way, Grandma’s Hand was the hand of my dear mother.  As a side note. You don’t have to wait until Mother’s Day to honor the memory of the maternal figure who helped make you what you are today.  Now get back to pointing to heaven and reminding yourself with the Lord involved, today will be better!  Be better!

Still committed to the climb,

Mark L. King
