READING IS NOT JUST FUNDAMENTAL…

“For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 The Amplified Bible)

Reading is fundamental. That familiar phrase has its origin as explained on Wikipedia: Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF) is the oldest and largest non-profit children’s literacy organization in the United Stated. It was founded by Margaret McNamara in 1966. RIF provides books (print and digital) and reading resources to children nationwide with supporting literacy resources for educators, families, and community volunteers.

Don’t put this meditation down! Keep reading! The ability to read will foster success in many areas of life at all stages if life. Therefore, parents and grandparents should ensure that their children and grandchildren learn to read before they start their academic journey, beginning at the pre-school level, and no later than the kindergarten level. Reading is fundamental.

Parents and grandparents in many homes monitor screen time, referring to time spent watching TV or on social media. Time should be set aside for reading books and that time should be monitored and maintained too. Yes, reading is fundamental, but reading, as I will explain, is not just fundamental.

Now, let’s go beyond having concern about children reading. Children and adults need to devote time to reading regularly. A number of surveys show that the number of adults reading one book a year has drastically declined. Reading is fundamental should be a philosophy practiced in all homes and at all levels. Keep in mind, however, that reading is not just fundamental. Need an explanation? Keep reading!

When it comes to our spiritual well-being, reading is not just fundamental, but it is essential. Being able to read will enable individuals to gain insight from the word of God, the Bible. You know, that book that is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path.  You know, that book which is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for instruction in righteousness. You know that book, the one that will make you prosperous and successful in life. Reading the Bible, well it’s not just fundamental, its indeed essential.

So, get in your word every day and see to it that not only do the children in your family have a Bible, but they read it. And you set aside time to help them understand it, something you can do because you go beyond reading to the next step, studying, and to the step after that, applying the word of God in your life. You can show that reading is not just fundamental, but it is essential. Be blessed!

Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.” (Romans 15:4 NLT)

Committed to the climb,

  1. Reading is essential. Reading and studying the word, the Bible, is not only essential but life saving. My time would be better spent in the word of God, rather than in other non-essential, trivial things. Get in the word, and stay in it.

    1. Your response, when read by others, will be motivating. Thank you for reading and responding faithfully. Be blessed!
