“Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you do.” (Joshua 1:8 Easy-to-Read Bible)
As part of our Tutorial & Mentoring ministry at our church, following a lesson at what we call “The Community Table,” a group of children ranging from first grade to fourth grade are assigned a tutor to help them complete their homework assignments one-on-one. Monday the student I was assigned to was a first grader. His homework assignment was to read several books over a course of time, and color a balloon on a page provided by his teacher for every book he completed. He did not bring a book with him, but that’s okay. He just had to read a book, any book. I told him to go get a book from one of the classrooms in our Education Center.
Now, he could have gotten a fictional, funny, fantasy book, but he didn’t. He loves science and technology, even at his young age, so he could have picked a book aligned with his interests and expressed career aspirations, but he didn’t. He could have picked a book that focused on history and historical figures, appropriate for his grade level, but he didn’t.
This promising first grader picked a book on David and Goliath. While I was amazed at his reading level and by the inquiring questions that he posed, I was most impressed by the fact that he chose a bible related book to read. We went over it twice and I have to tell you, it was in line with what is written in the bible. Again, I was amazed and impressed that he chose a story from “The Book.”
This brings me to a question for you. Aside from this meditation, what else did you choose to spend your time reading today? Did you read articles on the internet, articles related to your field of work, required reading for your undergraduate or post-graduate course or professional certification, or emails and postings on your favorite apps, or did you choose to read more from “The Book?” Only you can answer that question. Yet, I hope I have moved you to make a plan to choose to read more from the word of God. It is profitable. Have a great Wednesday! Be blessed!
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 English Standard Version)
