WHO IS YOUR SUPERHERO?

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned. But he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:17-18 Modern English Version)

Superman, is a fictitious superhero, sent by his father from a dying planet, seems to be featured in several films or TV shows over the years. Do you recognize these “Superman” stars? Kirk Alyn (1948 Series), George Allen (1952 Series), Christopher Reeve (1978 Film), Gerard Christopher (1992 Show), Dean Cane (1993 Show), Brandon Roth (2006 Film), Henry Caville (2013 Film), Tyler Hoechlin (2021-2024 Show), Nicholas Cage (2017 Cameo Appearance in “The Flash”), and David Corenswet (2025 Film). It seems like there is a Superman for every generation, right?

There are two distinct traits about the Superman shows that I watched or view in reruns. First, he was not totally invincible and his ability to conquer great things was reduced or render weak when he was exposed to Kryptonite. (Don’t act like you don’t know about Superman? Smile!) Second, Superman could easily hide who he was by donning a pair of glasses. I guess viewers were supposed to be as blind as the other main characters in the show that didn’t easily recognize Superman when he played the mild-mannered reporter, Clark Kent.

Are you saying, “Come on Mark! Get to the point of this meditation!” Well, let me get to the points. Don’t get more engrossed with the life-saving adventures of the fictitious Superman character of your generation but be more enthralled by the lifesaving act of Christ on Calvary. Christ was sent by His Father to save a dying world; a world that included a wretch like you and me. Isn’t it amazing! Here is something that is also amazing, as God’s grace is still being extended to save people who put their faith in His Son. The Son, He’s still saving folks, the same Person, not a different character, decade after decade; past, present, and future.

I’m not done! I need to tell you that if you turn to Jesus, you will find He has nothing that can take away His power! Also, I must tell you that as a believer you should not be like you were when you were a kid, running around with a towel tied around your neck acting like you were superman, and then putting on fake glasses as you played the role of Clark Kent. No, you should never hide your identify. You should not have a secret identity. Whatever you wear, let people see you are born again! Regardless of your appearance during the times in which you live, let the eyes of others see, regardless of your attire, in spite of the size of your challenge, and in view of the obstacles in your way; let other see that you are a child of God, evident by what you do! One more challenge! While you cannot save anyone, you can assist in the saving process by leading someone to the Savior. This comes under the heading of evangelism.

I’m still not done. Here is a timely, personal evangelism approach. Ask someone who is their favorite superhero. After they respond, ask them to guess who your superhero. If they fail to say, “Jesus,” immediately correct them and say the name, Jesus! Amen!

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” (Galatians 2:20 NASB)

Committed to the climb,
