MY MAN!

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.  Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” (Psalm 37:23-24 NKJV)

The purpose of this meditation is in fact multi-dimensional, inasmuch as the phrase used in the title, “My Man,” has multiple meanings and varying associated inferences that depend on the use of the phrase.  I’ll explain what I mean in a second, but first, recognizing that the expression “My Man” immediately causes most of us to identify with the movie star who we will simply call “Denzel,” let me tell you the phrase goes back years ago, okay decades ago, to when even yours truly was a little child.  So before I proceed, let’s get two things out of the way this Monday morning.  Go ahead and do your best Denzel impression and then get the question that popped in your mind out of the way; that question where you were wondering if they even had color TV way back then.  Are you done?  By the way, you did pretty good on your impersonation!

Let’s get to my explanation of the term, “My Man,” having multiple meanings or inferences.  If you are married, your husband is the one you rightfully claim to be “My Man.”  Sisters, if you have been seeing the same man for some time (Notice I said seeing and not shacking.), “My Man” can be used in reference to your, let’s say, boyfriend.  “My Man” is also used by adults to refer to their little lads who do something good; something commendable; something that cries out for a verbal form of admiration, affirmation, appreciation, or encouragement to keep doing good things, performing thoughtful acts or deeds of kindness.  “My Man” has also been used sarcastically as an introductory phrase that precedes a negative criticism or a naughty release of anger.  In the latter situation it can get very negative and very ugly, very quickly.  “My Man” has been used as a description of the man you fantasize about stepping into your life to be your prince charming.  And, somebody reading this meditation today is hoping to hear “My Man” expressed as a term of endearment.

Like I said initially “My Man” has multiple meanings and varying associated inferences that depend on the use of the phrase.  However, there is a usage many of us never think about.  What am I saying?  Well, what if the Lord looked at individual men, including you, including your man or the young lads in your house that are in that process of maturing, developing to the point of manhood, would the Almighty declare with a smile on His Divine face, “My Man?”

That’s something to think about and something worth sharing with your man, boys who want to be men, kids who wrongly think they are men already, and the man who wants to be yours until death do ye part via holy…yes holy…matrimony.  While the Scriptures can be searched to find much help to earn the right to be looked upon by the Lord and referred to in His voice that will sound like a trumpet or many waters as “My Man,” I have given two verses today, one above and one below, to get someone or you (If the shoe fits wear it.) to be designated from the throne of God as “My Man!”  Go out today set on pleasing the Lord and gaining His favor!  Be blessed!

A good man obtaineth favour of the Lord: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.” (Proverbs 12:2 KJV)

Still committed to the climb,

Mark L. King
