THE THERMOMETER OF LIFE

“Sometimes up, sometimes down, sometimes leveled to the ground…”

Yesterday, I wrote about “The Weeds in Your Yard,” focusing on uprooting the sins that so easily entangle us in our lives. Today, I woke up, still focused on our lives. I’m sure that you will agree with me, that just as the reading on the thermometer hanging on your wall or front porch changes during the seasons of the year, or even during the various periods of any given day, for each one of us, the thermometer of life fluctuates, oscillates, or vacillates during the years, the seasons, and even in any twenty-four hour period of time that we call a day.

Sometimes we are sad and sometimes we are glad. Sometimes we are enthusiastic and sometimes we enter a period where we are apathetic or uninterested. Sometimes we are warrior and sometimes we are worriers. Sometimes we have to deal with the suffering of the nighttime and sometimes we get to experience, thank God, the joy that comes in the morning. Are you seeing the thermometer of life as you read? Sometimes we feel unmovable, and other times we feel that we have moved, perhaps even unnoticeable to others, off the narrow path of righteousness. Sometimes we are ready to help, and other times we are the ones who are in need of help. As we think of the thermometer of life, praise the Lord, for He is a very present help in times of trouble. Check out Psalm 46! And Jesus left us a Helper! (Read John 15:26.)

Our household thermometer shows the temperature outside and we can see how it varies. Well, so does the thermometer of life which projects a real-time visual on the outside, revealing just how much we are living as a disciple of Christ; just how much we have denied ourselves, picked up our cross and followed Jesus. Check out Luke 9:23!

We have no control over the household thermometer that tells us how hot or cold it is on any given day. However, the thermometer of our life, either as an individual or as a local church, it can be controlled, especially when we respond appropriately to the words of the Lord, as spoken to the letter to the church at Laodicea, “I know your deeds, that you are [c]neither cold (invigorating, refreshing) nor hot (healing, therapeutic) …” Check out Revelation 3:14-17!

Today, let’s make an effort to be consistent wherever we go, in whatever situation we find ourselves, and regardless of whenever the enemy tries to lower the reading on our thermometers of life. Let’s do better today, regardless of wherever, whatever, and whenever! Listen! You do not have to do it alone! We have help! Jesus said, in the Great Commission, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually—regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20 The Amplified Bible)” Have a great day! Be blessed!

“…but I’m going to see the king.” (Spiritual Song)

Committed to the climb,

Mark L. King

  1. The thermostat of life can get just as cold or as hot as the temperature in the outdoors. The difference is we have a Helper that never lost a case, One that will never leave us or forsake us…that to me is such good news.
