“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 NIV)
The large font of the first that you noticed in the opening verse was not a mistake. I did it intentionally and if you were interrupted immediately after reading the title and you got no further than the first word earlier, even at that point you had a pertinent lesson for believers. You surely went away thinking as if talking to yourself, “Do my best to walk by faith today.” “Do not turn away from the beliefs I have regarding the Father and the Son!” “Do unto others as I would have them do unto you!” “Do likewise as I saw Jesus do in the Scriptures.” Well, with the interruption gone, and now that I have your attention, let me give you an introductory story and follow that with something interesting for you to do. Remember, “To do is to learn.”
Thirty-six years ago, perceived as a long time perhaps by you, but that time span seems like only yesterday to me, I was training in Interaction Management. The trainer taught us some principles that would be beneficial as we engaged with others in a variety of scenarios at the workplace or in our spheres of interaction outside of work. After four days of instruction, on the fifth day of training we were given an assignment where we had come up with our own scenarios and apply what we had been taught. We had to take the principles and the process we were exposed to and apply them for the purpose of enhancing our learning. Obviously they believed the ancient Oriental saying too, “To do is to learn.”
Here is where you come in. Here is an assignment for you to do. Read the closing text below, Habakkuk 2:2-4 (Amplified Bible). Read it in its context. Grab a piece of paper and see what you can take from this passage that is profitable for you. Yes, you got it! This is a do your own (DYO) to enhance and advance your handling of the word of God. Look, most of us have more time than usual on our hands and we are looking for something to do. What options do you have for going out on a Friday night anyhow? Are you speechless at the moment? Well let me help you out in responding. Here is a good option! If you are already shaking your head to indicate that you will pass on this opportunity for growth, think again! Repeat this aloud, allowing it to resound as a motivating message in your mind: “To do is to learn.” Have fun! Smile! Be blessed!
Still committed to the climb,
Mark L. King
