THE ASTONISHING ANSWER

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6 NIV)

A Tennessee high school student, a young lady who just old enough to get a driver’s license, was interviewing for an internship with a health provider. The interviewer posed a question, “Why do you want to want this internship?” The young lady responds, “I was always told by my mother and grandmother that our hands were an extension of the hand of God. So, I want to use my hands to help care for others in need of assistance, provide loving care to those in need, and let these hands be as I was taught, an extension of the God’s hand.” The interviewer was astonished, amazed, and in awe. She says, “Of all my years interviewing people for positions in health care, this is the first time anyone answered the question like you did.” After expressing how the young lady’s astonishing answer touched her heart, she said, “You are hired!”

There are a few lessons for us in this true account. First, parents should be obedient in teaching their children from godly perspectives. Second, know that children will listen when told or taught in the right way, and even after many years have passed, the lessons taught will not be forgotten. Third, right training leads to right answers and right answers lead to landing right where you should be; right where God wants you to be. Finally, the fourth lesson is personal. Your hands and my hands must be viewed today, right now and going forward, regardless of where we work, play, vacation, and in our homes. To make sure I am clear, let’s just say that wherever we are, our hands should be an extension of God’s hand.

Praise God for the young lady’s astonishing answer. When you have the opportunity, teach a child you know the words found in the verse below. Be blessed!

“Remember [thoughtfully] also your Creator in the days of your youth [for you are not your own, but His]…” (Ecclesiastes 12:1 Amplified Bible)

Committed to the climb,

Mark L. King

  1. “I am not my own, but I am His.” That was such an eye opener for me. Although I know this to be true, reading it today made me realize the importance of that statement. Knowing my hands are an extension of His was even more enlightening, especially coming from such a young soul.

    1. Since I know you well, Dr. King, I can say that you demonstrate consistently that you are cognizant that your hands are an extension of God’s hands. Be blessed!
